Designed by Eugene Stoner, to compliment the firepower of american special forces infantry sections the Stoner gained an excellent repuation for reliability and firepower and saw wide use with U.S Special forces particularily during the mid to latter stages of the Vietnam War. In general the Stoner system, while having the advantages of modularity and interchangeability of parts and thus great flexibility in tactical use, was too expensive for use Army Wide. Overall, some 3,500 to 4,000 Stoner 63 weapon kits were produced between 1962 and 1971.
